51ZERO/MAPP: MEDWAY SUPERSTARS

This will be the first opportunity to see all 10 short film portraits of the selected Medway artists who represent the diversity of creative practices, career stages, spaces they make work in and the places in Medway that are most important to them.

Margherita says:

“I’m delighted that Medway Superstars will be part of Estuary Festival, where this work can reach new audiences and contribute to a wider cultural conversation. Through these film portraits, I’m trying to raise some questions: What makes a place an ‘artistic hub’? What is the role of artists, the community, and local authorities in shaping it? How can artists make an impact if nobody knows who they are or where they are? How can a local place like Medway gain global significance?

Over the coming weeks in the countdown to Estuary Anthology, we will be introducing each artist on our social media platforms.

Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram and share our posts widely!

In the run up to Estuary Festival, you can also see a preview tour of the first 4 portraits at a range of Medway Libraries during library opening hours.

Strood Library              Monday 12th May to Saturday 17th May

Luton Library                Monday 19th May to Saturday 24th May

Walderslade Library    Tuesday 27th May to Saturday 31st May

Update on the progress of the 4 film-portraits for Old High Street Intra

Lead Artist Margherita Gramegna says ‘We are thrilled by the wide range of artists who applied to be part of Medway Superstars,

The opportunity for artists to submit to our Open Call was widely advertised across 51zero, Medway Arts and Creative Medway social media channels and newsletters as well as those of our partners HSHAZ, Medway Council, Cement Fields and a range of artists networks.

We received over 50 submissions from a broad range of artists both in terms of artistic disciplines and levels of experience from emerging to internationally recognised and everything in between.

We formed a cross disciplinary advisory panel with local, regional, national and international experience to support us in making a well balanced final selection using a range of criteria.

The panel were:  Sue Jones, Peter Fillingham, Thea Behrman, Peter Hatton, Amer Kamal, Fiona Watt and Alex Cameron.

I would like to thank them all for their time and dedication to this process.

It was a real challenge!’

We are delighted to announce that the 4 artists selected to represent OLD HIGH ST INTRA are:

Christopher Sacre – Artist and Art Facilitator
Jane Pitt – Audio / Visual Artist
Jake Wood – Performance and Intervention Artist
Sarah Blacker Barrowman – Milliner

You can find out more about them in Artists Portrait Films

We will be announcing the remaining 6 artists selected for Medway Superstars, representing the rest of Medway very soon!.

The final film of all 10 artists selected will be showcased as part of Medway Culture Fest 2024.
